A five-member gang allegedly tied up a couple and robbed them of 40 sovereigns of jewellery and ₹40 lakh in cash near Paramathi Velur here in the wee hours of Monday.The police said that a gang broke into the house of Vairavan (60), a jaggery trader residing at Pilikalpalayam, and his wife Sumathi (55), on Sunday night. The couple, who were fast asleep, came out of their room after hearing a noise. The gang allegedly tied them up and attacked them.Later, the gang stole jewellery and cash from the house and fled. On Monday morning, the couple managed to untie themselves and alerted the Paramathi Velur police. The police held an inquiry. Forensic experts lifted fingerprints from the house and a sniffer dog was also pressed into service. The police are verifying CCTV footage in the locality. A case has registered.
