The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department to file a status report on the steps taken towards the chanting of Tamil hymns during the consecration of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai.
The court was hearing the petition filed by Tamil Rajendiran alias R. Rajendiran, who sought a direction to the authorities to take effective steps to implement the chanting of Tamil spiritual mantras and Tamil hymns along with Sanskrit in Yaga Salai, Karuvarai, and Gopura Vimaanam during the consecration of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to be held in September.
The State submitted that the date was yet to be finalised and the authorities would place on record the steps taken with regard to the conduct of pujas and rituals in Tamil.
Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy said the legend goes that Pottramaraikulam, situated within the precincts of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple was the Sanga Palagai, which was the Seat of the Tamil Sangam for staging epics and poems in Tamil. “Let the steps taken by the authorities towards the use of Tamil hymns be placed before the court by way of a status report,” the court said and posted the matter to June 2 for filing the status report.
