The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday granted four weeks time to the revenue authorities and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to submit the report on the joint survey conducted by the authorities of the Thirupparankundram hill.A Division Bench of Justices G.R. Swaminathan and S. Srimathy passed the direction while hearing the contempt petition filed by Hindu Dharma Parishad, Madurai, seeking compliance of an earlier court direction. The court was informed by the authorities that the joint survey of the Thirupparankundram hill was completed. The authorities sought time to file the report.Earlier, the court had asked the Madurai Collector to direct the revenue authorities to extend their cooperation for conducting a joint survey of the Thirupparankundram hill with the ASI. The court had directed the joint survey to be concluded in May, 2026.The Hindu Dharma Parishad, Madurai, had sought a direction to bring the entire Thirupparankundram hill under the control of the Centre and the ASI.The court in 2025 had granted liberty to the Hindu Dharma Parishad, Madurai, to give a fresh representation to the Centre and the ASI, who were, in turn, directed to consider it, and pass appropriate orders after affording due opportunity to all parties concerned, as expeditiously as possible.
