The biomining process aimed at reclaiming land by removing waste from the Vedimara waste disposal site near North Paravur is nearing completion.
The process of backfilling has started at the site. The soil obtained after segregating waste and extracting refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is used for backfilling after carrying out scientific testing, according to a communication.
A total of 18,055 cubic metres of waste had accumulated at the site. A majority of waste consisted of plastic, glass, and footwear. The excavated waste is being sorted, and RDF is being transported to a private cement company in Coimbatore. As much as 11,476 tonnes of RDF have been transported, it said.
The release said around 2.4 acres would be reclaimed and utilised for other development projects once the waste removal was completed. The biomining project is being carried out by the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project with financial assistance from the World Bank. The target is to complete the backfilling process by mid-May, according to the release.
