Aformer ambulance driver was arrested by Forlì Carabinieri police at the weekend after the deaths of several elderly people who had travelled in his ambulance in Emilia-Romagna.
Luca Spada, 27, was charged with the aggravated homicide of an 85-year-old woman on November 25, although investigators suspect he may also have caused the deaths of other people too.
When asked if Spada was a serial killer, Forlì Chief Prosecutor Enrico Cieri told a press conference on Monday that "we are working on a psychological profile - this is one of the things we will have to develop".
Cieri said the motive was not yet known and there were a wide range of options, including economic ones, noting that Spada had links to a funeral parlour.
The man, who worked for the Italian Red Cross and has been suspended, is suspected of killing the patients with injections during journeys between hospitals and care homes.
