The Thalassery district sessions court has sentenced a man to three life terms for the murder of his wife, a civil police officer, at her residence in November 2024.

Thalassery district sessions judge K.T. Nisar Ahammed awarded the punishment to K. Rajesh, a native of Kozhummal Kottur Peralam, for killing his wife P. Divyashree of Kovval Paliyeri. Legal experts noted that awarding three life sentences in a single case is rare.

The prosecution, led by public prosecutor K Ajith Kumar, had argued that the case fell under the “rarest of rare” category, citing the nature and circumstances of the crime.

Divyashree, an officer attached to Chandera police station, was hacked to death on November 21, 2024, by Rajesh who forcibly entered her house. She had earlier filed a case in the Kannur family court expressing her unwillingness to continue the marriage.

According to the prosecution, Rajesh came on a motorcycle in the evening, poured petrol through the grill of the veranda and set it on fire before entering the house. He then attacked Divyashree with a machete. Her father, Nanu, who tried to intervene, sustained injuries to his hands.
