A 29-year-old man died following an assault during a quarrel at a funeral procession in Washermenpet on Wednesday.
The deceased, Imran, of M.K.B. Nagar in Vyasarpadi, worked as a drummer at funeral ceremonies. He was listed as a “C” category rowdy with five pending cases, according to police records.
The police said Imran consumed alcohol while playing the drums at a relative’s funeral at the Moolakothalam burial ground. An argument broke out when he bought tea for the fellow drummers, prompting Kader Basha of Sathyamurthy Nagar to question him. The verbal altercation soon turned violent, with Kader Basha allegedly assaulting Imran and striking him on the chest. Imran later complained of severe chest pain and returned home by autorickshaw.
His condition deteriorated shortly after reaching home, following which his family rushed him to the Government Stanley Hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead. Preliminary medical findings indicated internal chest injuries and minor external injuries.
Based on a complaint lodged by his wife, Durga, the Washermenpet police registered a case and arrested Kader Basha, along with another individual who was present at the scene.
