California Lawmakers Pass Resolution To Rename César Chavez DayThe California state Senate passed a resolution Thursday to rename César Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day, sending it to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk for his signature.Senate President Pro Tem Monique Limón, the bill's lead author, praised Chavez's accusers for coming forward with their sexual assault accusations against the farmworker labor leader, as detailed in a bombshell investigation in The New York Times last week. "The California legislature thanks the survivors for sharing their truths, and hopes that by renaming this day, we are supporting the values of the movement of dignity and justice," Limón said at the vote."Farmworker Day is a recognition of a movement, a movement that has fed this nation," she continued, saying the movement has always been about more than one person.Communities throughout California are also working to rename streets and other institutions named after the disgraced labor leader.See All UpdatesClose
