The importance of early intervention, inclusive education, and social acceptance of persons with Down Syndrome was highlighted by Senthil Kumar Nallusamy, Chief Cardiologist, Rana Hospital, during a special programme co-hosted by Tiruchi Disability Forum and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Tiruchi Chapter, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on Friday.
In his address, Dr. Nallusamy explained that Down Syndrome is a genetic condition, scientifically known as Trisomy 21, where an individual has an extra copy of chromosome 21.
C. Shantakumar, director of Spastics Society of Tiruchi, Praveen from Tiruchi Disability Forum, Satheesh Kumar, president and Padma Priya, secretary respectively of the paediatrics association, were present.
Speakers highlighted the importance of spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with Down Syndrome. The programme featured awareness activities and interactions to promote the message of inclusion and compassion.
