The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that “America First” President Donald Trump is ironically “obsessed” with buying Florsheim shoes, which are manufactured overseas, for his friends and advisers. Recipients of the shoes include Vice President J.D. Vance, members of Trump’s Cabinet like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and conservative television personalities like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, among others. The Florsheim brand was founded in Chicago in the 19th century and originally made all its shoes in United States-based factories, but went offshore in the 1980s. Its shoes are now manufactured in Cambodia, China, India, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, according to the brand’s website.Trump reportedly pays for the shoes, which retail for around $145, with his own money. Part of his 2024 presidential campaign centered on his promise to stop U.S. businesses from offshoring jobs, claiming, “This new American industrialism will create millions and millions of jobs.” Trump has also tried to enact increased tariffs on imported goods, even after the Supreme Court declared some of them unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision on Feb. 20.While Trump may be comfortable with the hypocrisy of advocating for “America First” policies while buying imported shoes, there are plenty of well-made men’s dress shoes crafted in the U.S. American manufacturing costs make these shoes more expensive, but according to customer feedback, they’re stylish, timeless and durable. Reviewers say they can last years, if not decades, and many of the brands offer repairs or refurbishing services to help them stay in top-notch shape without necessitating the purchase of a new pair.Below, find a selection of American-made men’s dress shoes that are worth the splurge — both to support American businesses, and to potentially save yourself from having to buy new dress shoes for a long, long time.Allen EdmondsAllen Edmonds' classic Park Avenue cap-toe oxfordAllen Edmonds shoes, like their popular Park Avenue cap-toe oxford, are handcrafted in Port Washington, Wisconsin, albeit often with imported materials like the European calfskin leather used to make the upper shown here.Allen Edmonds also have a presidential connection: Four different U.S. presidents wore a pair from the brand to their inauguration. Celebrities like LeBron James and Keanu Reeves have also been spotted rocking Allen Edmonds. The Park Avenue is one of the brand's most popular, and features a lace-up closure, leather-lined interior and cork insoles designed to mold to your foot's shape over time for a customized fit.If you buy them directly from the Allen Edmonds site, you can customize the shoes further by selecting your own combination of styles, colors and materials in the Custom Shop. They're also available at Nordstrom. You can get a pair in 10 colors and sizes 5-16, with widths AAA-EEE available, and the shoes can be recrafted as needed, saving you from needing to buy a second pair.Promising review: "I am very hard on dress shoes, and previous brands I bought never seemed to last. They didn't keep their shape and/or were not comfortable. My Park Aves seem to last forever, and are remarkably comfortable. I am on my feet a lot on hard floors and pavement. That these shoes look so great, last so long, and are so comfortable is a bit of a miracle. I've had my first pair for over a decade, and just bought another pair. True value for the money in every sense of the phrase." — WellsRed WingA slightly more rugged Red Wing Heritage chukka bootWith operations in Red Wing, Minnesota, Potosi, Missouri and Clarksville, Arkansas, Red Wing's shoes have been made in the U.S. for over 120 years. Buy this boot!" — TFCHILDWill TookeOr the Red Wing’s Iron Ranger boots that one HuffPoster has owned for seven yearsAnother endorsement for Red Wing came from video managing editor Will Tooke, who sent us a snapshot of the brand’s Iron Ranger boots that he‘s worn for seven years (and counting). “I’d quickly worn through several much-cheaper pairs of boots, so my two requirements were made in America and built to last,” he explained of his decision to splurge on this pair. “They were undoubtedly a hefty outlay, but apart from the oiled leather developing an attractive, lived-in patina, they are as strong as when I laced them up for the first time. I’ve worn them for yard work, to the office and even as part of a smart casual outfit; a versatility that most footwear just can’t match.”The boot is available in men’s sizes 7-14 in both regular and wide widths, and you can choose from five earthy colors. Nordstrom"*The* Black Loafer," as one reviewer put it, by AldenIn the original Wall Street Journal story on Trump's love of Florsheim shoes, menswear writer Derek Guy suggested Alden Shoe Co. as an alternative. Alden was founded in Middleborough, Massachusetts in 1884, where it remains today — the only original New England shoe and bootmaker that's still there. According to reviewers, the quality is undeniable, so while the prices are a bit eye-popping at first glance, you get what you pay for. This classic black leather penny loafer can go with almost any outfit and is made with a flexible leather and rubber sole. The timeless black will never go out of style, but if you prefer, Alden also makes this in suede in both a dark and light brown, for a slightly different look. The black leather loafer currently has the most sizes in stock (8-12). When your shoes need repairs, you can request a Restoration Service Kit to get them expertly rebuilt and refinished.Promising review: "There are loafers… and then there are loafers. Alden, one of the last original New England shoe manufacturers, earned its icon status the hard way. These are the proof. They hit the sweet spot: polished enough for a suit, relaxed enough for jeans. The wider toe box is a godsend, especially if your feet don’t love being squeezed. They're comfortable right out of the box, then steadily mold to your foot until they feel more like slippers than shoes. The subtly pebbled leather adds quiet texture and serious class. Sure, you can find cheaper black loafers. But if you’re aiming for the mountaintop? These are it." — JCCPopeZapposThese SAS lace-up shoes with a moc toe and an emphasis on comfortThe least expensive shoe on this list is this lace-up by San Antonio Shoes, also known as SAS. This style is also eligible in all three colors for SAS's Premium Refurbish Program.Promising review: "I have two pair of these shoes and have been wearing them every other day for the past eighteen years. If the heels weren't worn down they would still be comfortable. As we get older (I'm 87) we loose the fat layer under the skin. I've several pair of expensive leather soled shoes I can't wear because the foot pain is unbearable. So, I just bought a new pair and they're just as comfortable as the old ones. They're the only shoes I can wear in comfort." — BobOak Street BootmakersOak Street Bootmakers' gorgeous Trench Oxford with a rubber-studded sole Oak Street Bootmakers' shoes are made in the U.S. Some of their materials are imported from other countries, like leather, but the Trench Oxford shown here is made with Horween Chromexcel, a cowhide leather made by a family-owned factory in Chicago. You might notice one other part of the Trench Oxford that stands out: the rubber-studded sole. You can even tour their factory in person or look at a digital tour on their website to get a glimpse of their shoemaking process. The wedge outsole on this Cavalier shoe gives it slightly more of a sneaker appearance (and a little more traction to wear it out and about), but the sleek, full-grain leather upper keeps this one looking nice enough for the office or a night out. It's also unlined, making it a good option for warmer weather as well, and the leather can mold to your foot's shape over time. This style is also eligible for recrafting, including rebuilding and resoling. You can get these shoes in black or brown in sizes 7-13.Promising review: "I am delighted with the Cavalier shoes. I liked the Brown ones so much that I bought a black pair as well. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. The 11. 5 size is what I normally wear and fits nicely with Danner's Lightweight Merino socks. The The soft unadorned leather is beautiful and feels great. The boots work well with casual wear and with sports jackets and slacks. The soles have been sure footed in western New York's snow and ice." — CORNELL J.
