Seven persons, including a jewellery shop owner, suffered burn injuries after a gas cylinder exploded at a goldsmith unit in Sowcarpet on Wednesday night.The unit, functioning on the fourth floor of a building on Singannan Street, was reportedly melting gold ornaments when the cylinder suddenly exploded, sparking a fire inside the workshop.Residents in the area, startled by the blast, alerted the police and Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters from nearby stations rushed to the spot and quickly brought the blaze under control.Seven people — including shop owner Suman Paul of Vyasarpadi and six workers — were injured in the incident. They were initially taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and later shifted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.Police sources said Suman Paul sustained about 40% burns, Aravind suffered around 30%, while the remaining five victims sustained roughly 20% burn injuries each.The Elephant Gate Police Station registered a case and launched an investigation.
