Two children were killed and seven others injured in a massive cylinder blast in a house in Navalur on Sunday, leading to the collapse of the building where three families were residing.
Around 7.30 a.m. on Sunday, a person identified as Vairamuthu lighted the stove. Due to gas leak, the four commercial cylinders he had kept in the kitchen exploded.
In the impact of the explosion, the building collapsed, and a fire that broke out damaged the windows, doors, and side walls.
The Tambaram police said Shankar, a resident of Chamundeswari Second Street in Navalur, had rented out his property partitioned into three separate sections, each occupied by different family.
Vairamuthu, who operates a catering service supplying food to hostels nearby, his wife Selvi, and their 7-year-old son Pradeep lived in one of the houses. In the second house, Sanjeev Kumar-Sonia couple were residing with their four-year-old daughter Krithika and two-year-old son Theeran, and Sonia’s mother Chitra. The third house in the building was occupied by a person named Murugan. As the residential units crumbled, all those residing in them were trapped under the rubble. Even the nearby houses felt the explosion.
