The death toll has increased to five in the fire caused by a cylinder blast at a jewellery manufacturing unit in Sowcarpet on February 25, 2026.

The police had said a gas cylinder had exploded in the jewellery-making shop owned by 35-year-old Sumanpal Bisojit, located on the fourth floor of a commercial building on Singannan Street of Sowcarpet.

In the accident, eight persons, including the owner, were severely injured and rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. However, within a few hours, Sumanpal Bisojit, the owner, died without responding to treatment. S. Arvind Nangal, B. Simanthopal, J. Asim, Suraj, Jantho Indrajit, Rakesh Deli, and Anand, who were workers from West Bengal, had been undergoing treatment. Simanthopal and Rakesh died the next day.

Early on Wednesday (March 4), two more persons, Suraj and Aravind, who were undergoing treatment at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, died, taking the death toll to five.
