Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) has announced a new initiative for conserving Kadamakudy.
Celebrated for its traditional Pokkali paddy cultivation, Kadamakudy Grama Panchayat has, for generations, sustained a community of fishers, agricultural labourers, and construction workers, the organisation said. “However, Pokkali farming, once the backbone of the local economy, is today grappling with mounting environmental, economic, and structural challenges. It is against this backdrop that Kufos has stepped forward with a commitment to provide scientific guidance and institutional support,” the organisation added in a press release.
As the first phase of the initiative, Kufos will undertake a detailed local-level survey in Kadamakudy panchayat. The study will examine issues related to agriculture, irrigation, and wetland conservation faced by the local community. Based on the findings, a comprehensive project roadmap tailored to the specific needs of Kadamakudy will be prepared. The university will also consider including the panchayat under its village adoption programme, ensuring sustained engagement and long-term intervention.
M. K. Sajeevan, Head of the Directorate of Extension, Kufos, led an awareness programme organised at Kadamakudy as part of World Wetlands Day observances.
