A Chicago surgeon accused of killing his ex-wife and her husband of nearly five years has pleaded not guilty.

Michael David McKee, appearing via video in a Columbus courtroom, did not speak during the hearing on Friday, Jan. 23. His attorney entered the not guilty plea to the charges on his behalf.

McKee, 39, is charged with four aggravated murder counts and one count of aggravated burglary in the shooting deaths of Monique and Spencer Tepe, who were killed in their Columbus, Ohio, home as their 1- and 4-year-old children were sleeping on Dec. 30.

McKee's attorney, Diane Menashe, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for further comment.

Friday's court hearing, which comes one week shy of the Tepes' fifth wedding anniversary, was packed with national and local media outlets, at least two true crime content creators, and curious members of the public who had to be admonished for taking photos, reported the Columbus Dispatch, part of the USA TODAY Network.
