The Basaveshwara Nagar police are on the lookout for a tea stall owner for setting fire to a woman after she refused to marry off her daughter to him, in a shocking incident reported in the early hours of Tuesday (December 23, 2025).

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. at Saneguru Vanahalli in Basaveshwara Nagar. The accused, identified as Muttu, allegedly poured petrol on the woman, Geetha, and set her ablaze.

According to the police, Muttu was known to the victim and her family. Geetha ran a provision store for her livelihood, while the accused operated a tea stall in the same locality.

Police said the accused had been pressuring Geetha to marry off her 19-year-old daughter to him. When the woman repeatedly refused, he allegedly resorted to threats and harassment. Enraged by her refusal, the accused allegedly attacked her by pouring petrol and setting her on fire.

Geetha sustained over 50% burn injuries and is currently battling for life at Victoria Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
