Seventeen kilograms of banned gutka were seized from an unclaimed bag on the Purulia–Tirunelveli Express when it arrived at Dindigul railway junction on Wednesday.

The Purulia–Tirunelveli Express that operates twice a week reached Dindigul at about 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Acting on a tip‑off that ganja, gutkha and liquor were being smuggled on the train, Dindigul railway police, led by Inspector Thuyamani Vellaichamy, conducted a check when it reached the station.

During the inspection, the police searched the general (unreserved) coaches and found an unattended bag. On opening it, they discovered banned gutkha being transported illegally. The railway police seized the bag and registered a case. After preliminary inquiry, the confiscated gutkha was handed over to officials of the Food Safety Department for further action.
