France's Assemblée Nationale showed support for an increase in the defense budget during a four-hour debate on the national defense strategy on Wednesday, December 10. But while the parliamentary discussion fulfilled the government's goal of demonstrating that it was possible to reach a consensus on how to fund France's rearmament, the debate nevertheless revealed significant divisions on how to fund the military build-up and, above all, on the assessment of the threats and adversaries that are supposed to justify the effort.
Though symbolic, the non-binding vote held after the debate showed unambiguous support for a higher budget: A large majority of members were in favor of raising defense spending in 2026 by €6.7 billion. In total, 411 voted in support of the government's proposal, and only 88 opposed it, mainly from the ranks of La France Insoumise (LFI, radical left) and the Communists. Twenty-two environmentalist MPs also abstained.
