he setbacks Donald Trump experienced with the elections held in the first week of November overshadowed an issue that could prove much more problematic for the rest of his term in office. The day after two Democratic governors were elected in Virginia and New Jersey, a Socialist mayor won in New York and the Republicans lost a referendum on redistricting in California, the US Supreme Court cast serious doubt on the legality of the most iconic measure Trump has taken since he came to power: The imposition of massive tariffs on countries which trade with the United States.

The decision, which the Supreme Court's nine justices are expected to deliver in the weeks to come, will have significant repercussions for the global economy, the US federal budget, the pace of inflation in the country, and, last but not least, the way the principle of separation of powers is interpreted in one of the world's oldest democracies.
