“Late Night” host Seth Meyers clowned Republicans on Monday for declaring that President Donald Trump had an “overwhelming mandate to do basically whatever he wants” in his second term.Meyers aired a supercut of conservatives claiming that the president got a “historic,” “clear,” “great” and “massive mandate” from Americans, an apparent nod to a line from his election victory speech last year.“Now generally speaking, if you have a really big mandate, you don’t have to tell people about it,” Meyers quipped.“And if that’s the first thing you brag about, it is a turnoff. It’s like if a guy’s Tinder bio said, ‘Loves hiking, plays board games, has a very big you-know-what’...”Meyers later said it “quickly became clear” that conservatives were “wrong” about a so-called mandate, noting that Trump didn’t win a majority of the popular vote and his approval rating cratered just months into his second term.He then flipped to a “vivid illustration” showing that the GOP wasn’t as “wildly popular” as they claimed to be: news coverage of “No Kings” protests against Trump over the weekend, including a demonstration in Boston.“Look at that crowd!” Meyers joked. “There hasn’t been a crowd that big in Boston since Dunkin held a promotion called ‘Win A Free Munchkin Every Time You Scream Jeter Sucks!’”Check out more of Meyers’ Monday monologue on “Late Night.”Close
