A site in Iduvai village will be utilised by the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation for temporary storage of solid waste, after fulfilment of the conditions of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, according to a directive of the Madras High Court.
The court directive, delivered in response to a petition challenging dumping of wastes by the City Corporation in abandoned quarries in Mudalipalayam and Nallur villages, requires the TNPCB to examine the suitability of a 17-acre area that the civic body has identified at a short distance from the abandoned quarries, for establishing a permanent dumpyard.
Alongwith Iduvai village, the petitioner P. Velusamy had also suggested two other possible locations as landfill sites: Kovilvali village and Elavanthi-Kallipalayam village.
The criteria is that the landfill site should be 100 metres away from river, 200 metres away from pond, 200 metres away from highway habitations, public parks and water supply wells, and 20 km away from airport/ airbase (after obtaining no-objection certificate from the civil aviation authority/ Air Force).
In the case of Kovilvali, there were developed residential plots located in the vicinity of the identified location, and the nearest habitation was at a distance of 50 metres. The same was the case with the location identified in Elavanthi-Kallipalayam village.
