The Tiruchi district unit of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the Mayor to reconsider the Corporation’s proposal to outsource sanitation and solid waste management work to private contractors under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The appeal comes amid the Tamil Nadu government’s initiative to bring solid waste collection and transportation services in 12 municipal corporations under a PPP model. In a petition submitted to Mayor M. Anbazhagan on Monday, AITUC district secretary K. Sureshkumar expressed concern that the move could adversely affect the livelihood, job security, wages and welfare benefits of sanitation workers employed by the Corporation. The union urged the Corporation to continue sanitation operations under its direct administration instead of outsourcing them under the PPP model. It also demanded that all sanitary workers currently engaged in these services be regularised, provided permanent employment, and granted higher wages. Published - June 22, 2026 07:41 pm IST
