The Tiruppur District Committee of CPI (M) has criticised the move by the Tiruppur Corporation to post its officials as Ward Coordinators, with the purported intent of improving basic amenities. The civic body had announced that it would be deploying its health inspectors, assistant engineers and other officials as coordinators in each of the 60 wards, and task them with monitoring solid waste management, drinking water supply and street lighting, through direct inspections every day from 6.30 a.m. to 10 a.m., and rectify deficiencies in maintenance promptly.Terming the move as “arbitrary and anti-democratic”, C. Moorthy, District Secretary, CPI (M) demanded withdrawal of the move, terming it unnecessary when there was a democratically- elected council. In a press release, Mr. Moorthy questioned why the Corporation had sidelined the elected council rather than convening council meetings and taking action on resolutions.Instead, the civic body ought to instruct its officials to desist from being indifferent towards council members when they convey the problems faced by the people, Mr. Moorthy said, taking exception to the move, which, he pointed out, was tantamount to indirectly exercise of power through bureaucracy.
