People don't go on field trips to Auschwitz, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolini said Wednesday commenting on Family Minister Eugenia Roccella saying that Italian school trips to Auschwitz are organized to link anti-Semitism to Fascism, a remark that caused a furore in Italy.
Parolin's remark prompted Roccella to say she agreed with him completely.
"You certainly don't go on a trip to Auschwitz," said Parolin.
"You go to Auschwitz to remember an immense tragedy that struck the people of Israel and which must remain a warning to all of us, even in the face of the rise in anti-Semitism we are unfortunately witnessing." Roccella, who is also birth rate and equal opportunites minister, responded by saying: "I completely agree with Cardinal Parolin.
One shouldn't go to Auschwitz on a trip: one goes to remember the anti-Semitism of yesterday and fight that of today, a scourge we must all defeat together.
