A long weekend of flooding has begun in a wave of wild weather forecast to move northward along the Atlantic Coast from Florida into New Jersey through Monday, Oct. 13.
Unfortunate timing is creating the compound weather event expected to bring moderate to major flooding along the coast through Monday.
A seasonal king tide event arrived with the fulll moon along the East Coast at the same time as a strengthening low pressure system offshore interacted with other weather patterns in the region to bring gusty winds, rain, waves and high seas. Strong onshore winds are forecast to push high tides higher into inlets, sounds, bays and rivers, the National Weather Service advised.
A combination of fresh and salt water flood events could occur, especially if high tides occur during periods of the heaviest rains, the weather service said.
The rough weather and ocean conditions have prompted a variety of watches and warnings along the coast and offshore, where marine conditions are forecast to be particularly hazardous.
