Former minister and Thondamuthur MLA S.P. Velumani of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has urged the authorities to install cameras on the newly inaugurated G.D. Naidu flyover in Coimbatore city to monitor vehicle speed and prevent accidents.

Speaking to reporters after viewing the flyover on Friday, he said the 10.1-km-long flyover on Avinashi Road, recently opened by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was planned and sanctioned during the previous AIADMK government under former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

“When the estimated cost of ₹1,621.30 crore was finalised, the entire amount was allotted by the then government. Administrative sanction was issued by former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and the project was fully funded by the State government,” he said.

Mr. Velumani said the project was conceived to address traffic congestion considering the presence of educational institutions, industries, and the airport along the stretch. “By the time the DMK came to power, 55% of the work had been completed. The remaining construction was delayed, although it should have been completed earlier,” he added.
