Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) that the Avinashi Road flyover in Coimbatore city, which he will inaugurate on October 9, will be named after G.D. Naidu, who is popularly known as India’s Edison.

According to an official press release, the 10.10 km flyover project was announced in 2020 and till May 2021, only 5% of the works were completed. With the Dravidian model government coming to power in 2021, the project was expedited and completed. Since Coimbatore is known for innovations, the flyover will be named after G.D. Naidu, who was a follower of Periyar’s ideals, it stated.

Rajesh Doraiswamy, chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore, said completion of the western bypass, expansion of Coimbatore airport, and execution of the Eastern bypass will enable the entire western region see multifold growth.

Welcoming the announcement, Vanitha Mohan, vice chairman of Kongu Global Forum, said the metro rail project should also be expedited as it will meet the public transport needs of the city.
