The monitors provide visual representations of traffic conditions, such as colour-coded maps (based on traffic density and obstructions), says P. Vijaya Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic (South).

:The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have adopted a Live Traffic Monitoring System to streamline traffic management and ensure smoother vehicular movement across the city.A live traffic monitor helps the GCTP stay informed about real-time traffic conditions, including congestion, incidents, and travel times, allowing them to make timely decisions. This application allows them to simultaneously monitor all 270 junctions in the city, covering around 1,000 roads, by gathering data from the paid service of Google Maps, and analyse data on traffic flow and speed.P. Vijaya Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic (South), said, “Live traffic monitors provide visual representations of traffic conditions, such as colour-coded maps (based on traffic density and obstructions). These visualisations highlight areas of traffic congestion, slowdowns, or incidents, enabling GCTP to quickly assess the current situation. We are constantly monitoring traffic movement on our dashboard at our office and the control room.Depending on the situation, we will deploy trained traffic police officers, and if the need arises, senior officers too. In this way, we can address traffic problems on a real-time basis, he added. The system constantly updates data, allowing the authorities to take timely precautionary measures and introduce traffic changes to avoid congestion. It also allows them to instantly respond to road incidents, such as accidents, road closures, or construction zones. This user-generated data contribute to the overall accuracy of the traffic information, officials said. The GCTP have also introduced Smart E-Beat System for the deployment of traffic police personnel at junctions. Using this system, the GCTP headquarters has been constantly monitoring the presence of traffic police personnel on the road. Published - September 28, 2025 01:20 am IST
