The Nagore Nagapattinam Rail Users Association has placed a set of long-pending demands of the travellers of delta districts and Karaikal to the Tiruchi Railway Division. Association office-bearers, led by its president S. Mohan and secretary M.M.A.A. Sithiq, met the Divisional Railway Manager, Balak Ram Negi, here on Thursday and submitted to him a memorandum containing a charter of demands. The memorandum said there had been no direct train services to Madurai or Tirunelveli either from Karaikal or Velankanni for the last 25 years. There was no direct service to Coimbatore and an overnight express train service to Bengaluru. The present morning service to Bengaluru from Karaikal has 56 halts enroute and takes more than 17 hours, it said seeking the operation of an overnight express train service. The association requested the divisional railway authorities to extend the Tiruchi-Tiruvarur-Tiruchi passengers (56805/56806) up to Karaikal or Thirunallar as there was no train service after 8.35 a.m. from Karaikal till the next day. It requested the authorities to increase the number of coaches in the passenger train being operated between Velankanni and Tiruchi as this was the only daily train to Tiruchi Junction.Introduction of a day express train between Tambaram and Velankanni via Thirunallar and Nagore; a daily morning express train from Puducherry to Velankanni via Thirunallar, Karaikal and Nagore; extension of the Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai train to Velankanni via Thirunallar, Karaikal and Nagore; inclusion of Velankanni, Nagore and Nagapattinam stations in the second list under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme; expediting the track doubling project from Thanjavur to Karaikal and early sanction for doubling the Thanjavur-Villupuram mainline section were among their other demands.
