The district administration, City Police, and Uyir, an NGO focused on road safety, launched ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan’ – a road safety initiative, along with its official logo on Saturday.

As part of the initiative, organisers plan a mega pledge drive targeting 10 lakh participants and a series of activities in the first week of October 2025 to engage citizens across all age groups. Government officials, police, educational institutions, industrial associations, and social welfare organisations will all participate, with the goal of making Coimbatore a model city for road safety.

Speaking at the launch, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar highlighted that Coimbatore recorded over 230 road fatalities in 2024, down from 300 in 2023, showing gradual improvement. He noted that many accidents involve new or recently licensed drivers, particularly young people, and that most accidents result from traffic violations and lack of awareness rather than road conditions or engineering faults.

He said initiatives like ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan’ aim to raise awareness and encourage responsible driving. The Collector also said that 13 stretches in the district, eight of them within the city, are accident-prone, and measures are underway to improve safety. He urged drivers to follow traffic rules and called on educational institutions to include road safety education to instil responsible behaviour from an early age.
