A stretch of a human chain formed for road safety awareness on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore on Thursday.

Around 10,000 people formed a total of 20-km of human chain on arterial roads in Coimbatore on Thursday to create awareness on road safety.Jointly organised by Coimbatore district administration, Coimbatore City Police and non-governmental organisation Uyir, the 20-km human chain was split into four stretches on Avinashi Road, Race Course Road, Pollachi Road and Palakkad Road.District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Ashok Kumar jointly inaugurated the awareness event in the presence of Uyir’s managing trustee S. Rajasekaran and other trustees.As part of the awareness drive, a 10-km human chain was formed from Anna Statue to Coimbatore airport junction. A 4.5-km chain from Rathinam College to Malumichampatti on Pollachi Road, a 5-km chain from Kunyiamuthur to Kovaipudur junction on Palakkad Road and a half km chain from Cosmopolitan Club to the Government Arts College at Race Course were the other three stretches.Student volunteers from Uyir Clubs, members of the industry, academia and NGOs took part to form the human chain, which the organisers claimed as the longest human chain for road safety in India. It was organised as part of various awareness activities planned under ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan’, a road safety campaign launched by the district administration, city police and Uyir recently.
