The FBI asked Thursday for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in connection with Wednesday’s fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, sharing still images and a surveillance video.Kirk was fatally shot in the neck while speaking to a large crowd of students in a courtyard at Utah Valley University. The agency on Thursday posted a photo on X of an individual wearing a hat, sunglasses, jeans and a black shirt with a picture of the American flag and a bald eagle on it. The Utah Department of Public Safety shared more photos later Thursday, and at a press conference, officials played surveillance footage that showed a black-clad figure running across the roof of a building and jumping down the side of it. The person allegedly left a handprint and forearm print, and a footprint that showed he was wearing Converse sneakers. The FBI said it’s offering a $100,000 reward for anyone with information about a possible suspect or person of interest.Earlier on Thursday, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason told NBC News that the shooter could have left the state.“We have no idea,” he said. “We’re exploring leads for individuals out of state and individuals that live close by. We literally have persons of interest, tips that are coming in on the tip line, that are spanning far and wide.”According to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, the FBI tip line has already received 7,000 tips so far.Yet FBI Director Kash Patel, who was present but did not speak at the press conference in Utah on Thursday evening, has been facing criticism for his handling of the investigation. Patel said Wednesday evening that the “subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody.”But just a little over an hour later, Patel clarified that it was a person of interest who had been taken into custody, and that that person had been released.“Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency,” Patel wrote on X.The flub comes as the FBI has also been accused of pushing out those not loyal to President Donald Trump. Patel is scheduled to testify before Congress next week, and lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle have accused him of a lack of professionalism in his social media posts after the shooting.“It was amateur hour,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told HuffPost about Patel on Thursday. The Senate Judiciary Committee oversees the Department of Justice.“He was doing a running commentary,” Durbin added. “Historically, the FBI keeps its mouth closed until it believes it’s the right time and the right message.”While the suspect still remains at large, authorities said they’ve recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle they believed was used in the shooting.
