Animal rights activist group PETA has called for an American influencer to be deported and banned from Australia after he made a controversial video in which he handled a crocodile.

Mike Holston, known online as The Real Tarzann, shared footage of himself wrestling a freshwater crocodile to Instagram, reportedly filmed at the Lockhart River, in Cape York about 520km north of Cairns earlier this month.

PETA Australia shared a statement on Tuesday slamming the former American professional football player, branding him 'cruel' and 'stupid'.

'Following videos of a social media influencer interfering with crocodiles, PETA is calling on authorities to follow the investigation through to the end, and for Mike Holston to be punished to the full extent of the law, including being deported and banned from entering Australia again,' the statement said.

'The American social media influencer visiting Australia regularly uses animals as props for content, including provoking them and engaging them in reckless, hazardous stunts.
