A 15-year-old boy drowned in the Kollidam canal near Thanjavur on Saturday evening after slipping and falling into the water.
The deceased was identified as Sivasurya, a Class 11 student of a government school in Melpalam and a resident of Abraham Pandithar Nagar.
Sivasurya had gone with a friend to the Kollidam canal near Sivaji Nagar to spend time on the banks during a school holiday. While sitting on the edge, he slipped and was swept away by the current.
Though some people bathing nearby attempted to rescue him, their efforts failed. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot but had to halt the search late in the night due to poor visibility. The search resumed on Sunday morning and the body was found floating near Vadaseri canal close to Puduppattinam.
The body was recovered and sent to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered by the Thanjavur Taluk Police, and investigation is on.
