The body of Gokulakrishnan, 16, of Manojipatti, who drowned in Grand Anicut Canal on Tuesday evening, washed ashore on Wednesday.
According to police, the deceased went for a swim along with his friends in the canal at Manojipatti on Tuesday evening. When he drifted away deep into the canal due to strong current, the Fire and Rescue Services Department was informed.
The Fire Service and Rescue Services personnel searched for Gokulakrishnan till late on Tuesday, in vain. On Wednesday morning, the Medical College Police received information that the body of a boy had washed ashore in the canal abutting M. K. Moopanar Salai.
Subsequently, the body was shifted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, where it was identified as Gokulakrishnan by his family members, police said.
Meanwhile, Thanjavur District Fire and Rescue Service Officer Kumar has called upon the public to be cautious while taking bath or visiting the water bodies in their areas.
