A 28-year-old woman from Assam gave birth to baby girl in the SMVT Bengaluru - New Tinsukia Superfast express train at Jolarpet railway station early Tuesday morning.

Police said the woman, identified as K. Amrita Hora, of New Tinsukia near Guwahati in Assam, developed labour soon after she went into a toilet in the S-5 coach at about 5.40 am. She was returning to her home town along with her husband Kishan Sobor (31) from Bengaluru.

She delivered a baby girl in the toilet in the train, when it was passing through Jolarpet railway station at that time.

The railway staff on board in the train noticed the woman andsoon alerted the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE), who in turn informed Railway security control room personnel over phone. “This is the first such incident to occur at the railway station. Both mother and child are stable,“ Nikil Kumar Gupta, Inspector, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Jolarpet, told The Hindu.

In a swift response, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Jolarpet, led by Mr. Gupta deployed police personnel including constables Pramod and Manishkumar and emergency medical staff Ranjith at the railway station.
