The police on Monday arrested a man on the charge of murdering his co-worker in a brawl near Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district on July 26.
N. Nagappan, 24, a resident of Kalaignar Nagar at Samanaickenpalayam near Periyanaickenpalayam, was arrested for murdering R. Hariharan, 23, from Jeeva Nagar at Vellamadai. The police said the duo had been working together in a company that undertakes aluminium fabrication works.
According to the police, Hariharan, his brother R. Senthurpandi, Nagappan and their friend Ranjith consumed alcohol together in a place on Samanaickenpalayam – Arivoli Nagar road on the night of July 26.
Hariharan and Nagappan had an argument during the drinking session, following which the latter assaulted him with a sickle. Hariharan sustained severe injuries and died at the spot. Mr. Senthurpandi and Ranjith suffered minor injuries when they tried to intervene. They were treated as outpatients at the Government Hospital at Periyanaickenpalayam.
A team from Periyanaickenpalayam station headed by inspector G. Rajesh Kannan rushed to the spot. Fingerprint experts, dog squad and scientific officers visited the scene of crime.
