Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Monday promised that the government will help firms set to be hit by 15% US tariffs after Sunday's trade deal between the United States and the European Union.
"Businesses absolutely must be given support," Tajani said, announcing a meeting would be held at the foreign ministry later on Monday "with all the representatives of the business world to talk about tariffs, give companies information and learn from them what is needed to support them and apply the export action plan".
When asked if the tariffs would make it necessary for the government to approve a corrective budget, Tajani said "we don't yet know the real effect".
He also said it was necessary to address the strength of the euro with respect to the dollar.
"I keep asking for intervention from the ECB to further reduce the cost of money," he said.
