The United States must apply tariffs correctly on Italian exports, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said after certain custom offices were reported to have requested higher tariffs for products like Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses.

At Tajani's request, the Foreign Ministry's Tariff Task Force has taken action "to protect our products from possible misinterpretations of the EU-US agreement".

The Foreign Ministry has taken specific steps with the US Embassy in Rome and the EU Commission's Directorate-General for Trade, and similar instructions have been given to the Embassy in Washington.

"Italy has always supported a frank and constructive approach" with the US, "and will continue to advocate for the correct application of the agreement," it said.

"We will use every means at our disposal to protect our businesses, our workers, and our manufacturing excellence," the Foreign Minister declared in a statement from the Farnesina, noting that the Task Force is also in constant contact with the Customs and Monopolies Agency for any necessary technical coordination.
