The hilly district of Idukki experienced moderate rain and wind on Friday (July 25, 2025).

A 50-year-old woman was killed and another woman injured when a tree branch fell on her while she was working in a cardamom plantation at Chakkupallam, near Kumily, on Friday. The victim has been identified as Sudha, a resident of KG Petty in Tamil Nadu.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Friday. She was working along with 36 other workers in the cardamom plantation when a tree branch fell on her due to strong winds. Though she was rushed to the family health centre at Puttady, her life could not be saved. Another worker, Prabha, was injured and admitted to Cumbum Government Hospital in Tamil Nadu. The body was shifted to Kattappana Thaluk Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The Cardamom plantation area of high ranges has been experiencing heavy rain and strong winds for the past several days.

Meanwhile, the shutter of the Ponmudi dam was opened on Friday. According to officials, gate number 2 of the dam raised 20 cm and released 15 cusecs of water to the Panniyar river.
