A 66-year-old farmer died when an arecanut tree fell on him due to heavy rain and wind at Kevala in Kuntur village of Kadaba taluk in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday.The victim, identified as Yadava Gowda, was working at a arecanut plantation when the incident occurred, sources said.Kadaba police registered a case in this connection.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for coastal Karnataka on Saturday and Sunday. The alert is valid till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.Houses damagedThe Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority said 12 houses were damaged due to rain and heavy wind in the district in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.In all, 24 electric poles, one transformer and 1.2 km of Mescom power supply lines were damaged during the period.The district recorded 29.6 mm rainfall against the normal 37.7 mm during the period.Dakshina Kannada district recorded 1,573.1 mm rainfall so far this year against the normal rainfall of 2,402.4 mm for the period from January to date.Udupi district recorded 23.1 mm rainfall in 24 hours.Hebri taluk recorded the maximum rainfall of 39.5 mm, while Kundapur taluk reported the minimum of 13.1 mm.
