A 67-year-old woman who was residing alone in her farmhouse in Namakkal district was murdered on Sunday.
R. Samiyathal (67) of Kulathupalayam near Nallur called her son and daughter, who are residing in Coimbatore and Maniyanoor respectively, early Sunday morning and told them that she was stabbed by two persons. They alerted the neighbours who took her to Tiruchengode Government Hospital. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore, where she succumbed to injuries around 10 a.m.
Meanwhile, information spread on social media that she was murdered for jewellery and cash. But, the police who checked the house, found cash and jewellery intact. Forensic experts lifted fingerprints from the house. Salem Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) E.S. Uma and Namakkal District Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Rajesh Kannan visited the spot and held inquiries.
The Nallur police registered a case, and special teams were formed to nab the culprits.
Police sources said they were verifying the CCTV footage in the locality and the motive for the murder was yet to be known.
