A daughter and her mother submitted a petition at the office of South Zone of Inspector General of Police Prem Anand Sinha here on Saturday demanding protection from a private banker who threatened them to pay an exorbitant amount as interest for the money they had borrowed.
Sasikala, the petitioner, who is from Mettupatti in Dindigul, said that five years ago, while her husband was undergoing treatment, she had allegedly borrowed ₹5 lakh from an individual, a known private banker in their area.
“As he had demanded an exorbitant interest for what they had borrowed, the family had paid ₹25,000 every month as interest,” she added.
While for the past 1.5 years they had paid the interest amount on time without missing a month, in the last few months, after her husband died, they were not able to pay the interest amount, she stated.
Ms. Sasikala who could not manage to pay the interest amount as her commitments increased after her husband’s death, she was irregular in repaying the amount.
