In the essay published on Saturday and later endorsed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Dario Amodei outlined a framework to pace the development of frontier AI model capabilities and create more time to manage mounting safety risks.

Amodei’s essay comes on the heels of an Anthropic researcher’s resignation over concerns that the firm and its competitors are not acting responsibly with AI development.

Dario Amodei says rapidly advancing AI systems are outpacing safeguards and is calling for new measures to “slow the pace” toward more powerful systems.

‘We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,’ says Dario Amodei

Sam Altman and Elon Musk responded with rare agreement to Dario Amodei’s call to action.

Dario Amodei said he is concerned that since this summer, AI has been ‘advancing drastically faster’.
