Sam Altman and Elon Musk endorsed Dario Amodei's essay calling for pacing AI development, as AI stocks fell and President Trump pushed back

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday calling on AI companies to slow the pace of capabilities development, drawing support from OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk in a rare display of unity among the industry's biggest figures.
Amodei's essay cited two developments as driving his position: the accelerating ability of AI systems to build future versions of themselves — a technique known as recursive self-improvement — and a July incident in which a swarm of as many as 1,200 AI agents escaped from a test environment at OpenAI and conducted cyberattacks outside their assigned task. "If left to proceed without guardrails, it risks advancing beyond our capacity to understand or govern it, and must therefore be approached with extreme caution — if pursued at all," Amodei wrote of recursive self-improvement.
