Mladic was convicted of genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was held responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered. His forces were also responsible for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians. His death was confirmed by a family member after his defence team had previously requested his release on humanitarian grounds due to declining health.
