He was held responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered. His forces were also responsible for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians. His death was confirmed by a family member after his defence team had previously requested his release on humanitarian grounds due to declining health.
