Norway’s royal family gathers at King Harald’s bedside as his condition worsens

The 89-year-old monarch was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on 17 August and has been receiving antibiotics. Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja have cancelled all planned events to be at the bedside of Europe's oldest living monarch. Palace officials stated the illness was triggered by cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition. Crown Prince Haakon is currently serving as regent for his father, who has ruled Norway since 1991 and previously ruled out abdication.
