Canada will announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, an official familiar with the plans told The Associated Press.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down late Friday and tariffs went into effect early Saturday morning.

“Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement.

Canada will retaliate with tariffs on US goods starting September 8, escalating the ongoing trade conflict.
