New wildfires broke out Monday in southern Greece as a major effort involving 200 firefighters southeast of Athens largely tamed a blaze that destroyed an abandoned poultry farm and forced evacuations.

A new wildfire broke out late Friday on the southern island of Crete as firefighters managed to tame two blazes in northern Greece and one in the Corinth region of the Peloponnese.

Firefighters battled a wildfire Monday in low vegetation near Kouvaras, a town in eastern Attica, as authorities ordered residents of a nearby settlement to evacuate.
